畳職人 徳田直弘 展 　- TATAMI ART -

畳職人としての私の創作の根底には、何が畳職人の真髄であり、
特に畳職人徳田直弘の存在意義と役割は何かという問いへの深い探求があります。

大事なのは「畳を残すこと」です。
どう次世代に繋げるか、どうやって残すのかが問われている気がします。
遡れば奈良時代から畳は受け継がれており、
現代まで残っていることは継承してきた先人たちの賜物ではないかと思います。

しかし日本でもっともポピュラーな床材である「畳」は生活空間に馴染み、
当たり前に存在していることで誰も見向きもしないものになっている現状があります。

私は「畳を製作する＝畳1.0」と捉え、
畳の新しい文化＝畳2.0＝畳を表現する時代が必要だ、と提唱しています。
『製作をするだけでは無く、畳の新しい文化を築くこと（アップデート）』が
現代の畳職人として必要ではないかと考えています。

一見、奇をてらったような行動に感じるかもしれませんが起こしたいことは、
畳に関する体験や思い出、感覚までも共有し、新たな畳の価値を見出すための”会話”という現象です。

単に畳の形状や材質だけの表現方法ではありません。
畳というワード、原料のイ草が持つ生命力や力強さや、
イ草が育つ環境、畳が製作されるときの音までも伝えていければと考えています。

作品を通じて、
お一人でも多くの方々が独特の香りや手触りなどを新たな視点で想起させ感じ取ることができれば、
日常において感じる安らぎや集中を再確認できるのではないかと考えています。

At the core of my creations as a tatami craftsman lies a deep exploration of what truly embodies the essence
of a tatami craftsman, and especially, what signifies the purpose and role of tatami craftsman Naohiro Tokuda. What’s crucial is “preserving the tatami.”
There’s a pressing question of how we can pass it on to the next generation and ensure its continued
existence.

Tracing back, the tatami has been passed down since the Nara period,
and its continued existence up to the present day can, I believe, be attributed to the efforts of our
predecessors.

However, even in Japan, where the “tatami” is the most popular flooring material,
it’s become so integrated into our living spaces that its ubiquity has rendered it almost invisible.
I perceive the act of creating tatami as “tatami 1.0” and advocate that we need a new culture of tatami
＝ “tatami 2.0” ＝ a time to express tatami anew.

Not just creating,
but also “updating to establish a new tatami culture” is what I believe is essential for a modern-day tatami
craftsman. While some might see my approach as eccentric or unconventional,

what I aim to invoke is a phenomenon of “conversation” about the experiences,
memories, and sensations associated with tatami.

It’s not just about the physical form or material of the tatami.
I want to convey everything from the word “tatami” itself, the vitality and robustness of the igusa (rush)
plants used as its primary material,
the environment in which igusa thrives, to even the sounds produced during the tatami-making process.

Through my works,if even one individual can recall and perceive the unique scent and texture from a fresh
perspective, they might be able to reaffirm the sense of comfort and focus they experience in their daily lives
with tatami.
