Fukuoka Asian Art Museum invites remarkable artists from around the world as part of its Artist in Residence Program, allowing them to stay and work in Fukuoka and interact with local people. Four artists who joined the program during its second (Oct. to Dec.) or third period (Jan. to Mar.) will present their works as the outcome of their residency in this exhibition, Memory, in Texture: Where the Imagined Holds the World Together.
Their realms of interest extend across a variety of fields – from the politics of sound, migration, family, and the body – yet each is deeply connected to memories that may sometimes be obscure, fragmented, and difficult to share with others. Through attempts to embrace such elusive texture in memories and their creative inspiration, the artists poured their sincerity into their works; rather than disregarding the ambiguity and replacing it with facts that sound beneficial.
When the world is driven by the power of “easier-the-better” logic and exposed to the crisis of division, we may find a clue from artists who tackle these issues to consider how our society might open a new horizon, strive to connect, and remain in touch with one another. We invite all to share this experience.
