The first period of Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residence Program 2025 invited Md. Fazla Rabbi Fatiq (Bangladesh), Willie Xaiwouth (Laos), and Baba Saori (Fukuoka). The artists developed their works and research as they appreciated the landscapes and the way of life in each of the places they visited in Fukuoka. “Life” refers to our living. What are we living to care for amidst the relentless struggles in life? The exhibition welcomes visitors with works illuminated by the life of each artist.

◇Artist
Md. Fazla Rabbi Fatiq
Residency Period 2025.7/8-10/2
Born in 1995 in Cumilla, Bangladesh. Lives and works in Cumilla. Through photography, Fatiq quietly renders socio-political issues and the forgotten history of Bangladesh. In this exhibition, his works focus on the theme of food that reflects the values of different households and communities while being under the significant influence of contemporary and global contexts. Through this theme, his work reconsiders our “life” in Bangladesh and Japan, spanning from the past to the present.

Willie Xaiwouth
Residency Period 2025.7/8-10/2
Born in 2001 in Saiyabouli Province, Laos. Lives and works in Vientiane. Xaiwouth works across painting, photography, and installation that delves into the memory of local communities, environmental issues, and people’s identity. In Fukuoka, he conducted research on bamboo trees, which are also commonly used in Laos, together with their extended use in technical and cultural contexts. The outcome of his research is expected to become an installation piece embodying the shape of a spinning lantern.

Baba Saori
Residency Period 2025.7/8-10/2
Born in 1978 in Fukuoka. Lives and works in Fukuoka. After battling with breast cancer, Baba has worked on photography themed on body, gender, and social minorities in Japan and Taiwan. This time, she presents an installation consisting of 88 photographs that resemble a Buddhist pilgrimage visualizing landscape, memory, and family-like close relationships, revealed through her reflection on her life story.

An internationally acclaimed media artist, Yao Chung-Han (Taiwan), presents a large-scale installation using the effect of light and sound.
