The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum conducts the Residential Program in which various art exchange activities such as residential art making and workshops are done by artists invited from Asian countries and region.  For this year, Alfredo D. Esquillo, Jr. (Philippines) and Khamtanh Saliankham (Laos) are invited from May and Le Thanh Duc (Vietnam) and Diyanto (Indonesia) from September for three months period.  In order to present the achievement of the four artists, the Winds of Artist in Residence 2001 is held.

Esquillo spent his three months in making the work in the shape of Jeepney (a public bus in the Philippines) under the title, ‘Trip to Heaven’.  He used a bicycle and a rear-car, constructed the structure with wood, and decorated the side and roof with iconographies of Jesus, photographs of Philippinos in Fukuoka and woven paintings.  Khamtanh made oil paintings of Laotian people and temples based on the paintings he brought from Laos and then made the series of paintings of shrines and the see that he saw in Fukuoka.  He thus compared the two cultures, Laos and Japan.  Duc painted abstracted Vietnamese people and festivals at an amazing speed.  Diyanto painted the walls making a space in the corner of the Artists’ Studio and composed an installation, ‘Growing up in Bitterness’.

The four artists met many people, discussed with them various things and experienced different things through exchanges during their stay in Fukuoka for three months.  And we will see the outcome of those exchanges in the exhibition.
