The Fukuoka Triennale is a triennial international art exhibition that introduces the most up-to-date art movement in 21 countries and regions in Asia. The 1st Fukuoka Triennale was held in 1999 commemorating the inauguration of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and this is the third exhibition.
The 1st Fukuoka Triennale, under the theme of “Communication: Channels for Hope,” featured art works which referred to the interconnections between people and which employed contemporary communication technology such as computers. The 2nd Fukuoka Triennale highlighted works generated through a process of collaboration using original and indigenous material, or the skills of handicraft under the theme of “Imagined Workshop.” The previous two exhibitions thus introduced expression created both by using the latest technology and by using indigenous materials and traditional skills the features which coexist in Asian contemporary art. Both of the exhibitions sought cohesiveness in and among communities via the channels of communication and collaboration.
However, these directions were originally sought after in response to the fact that poor relations among people, between individuals and wider society as well as between social groups were raising a number of issues in contemporary society. The conflicts of the post 9.11 world and crimes committed in our vicinity pose not only great challenges but an imminent security risks to all of us. Facing the reality squarely, we set the theme of “Parallel Realities” for the 3rd Fukuoka Triennale.
In Asia where the high-tech moving images and communication technology permeate to every corner of the daily life, the global/the local, physical reality/virtual reality, people or groups who have different ideas and different ways of feeling live together or side-by-side. Indifference and incomprehension towards the different worlds result in confrontation. The artists who gaze seriously at these Parallel Realities, however, never represent their society pessimistically. Instead they try to suggest the potential of such parallel or isolated cultures and societies to mingle and resonate in harmony. We believe the works that manipulate the technology and popular culture in this exhibition will generate in us the strength to face the reality. We may be able to find a method to transgress the boundaries of cultures and societies that exist in parallel.
A number of Asian artists are invited to Fukuoka during the exhibition to present collaborative art-making, performance and workshop. We hope many people will have an opportunity to experience the excitement and warmth of Asian art and culture.
We are delighted that this exhibition will be showcased in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen in the United Kingdom. We sincerely wish the exhibition will be of some small help in fostering understanding between people of different cultural backgrounds in a place where a large population of Asian origin resides. It is also our hope that this exhibition will lend momentum to people to cross the boundaries lying between the “Parallel Realities” in the British society.
