Four artists, Bruno Ruiz (Mexico), Sugihara Nobuyuki x Nakamura Ayaka (Nagano), Urakawa Taishi (Fukuoka), and Uemura Takahiro (Fukuoka), participated in the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Artist in Residence Program 2024 (Part 2). During their stay in Fukuoka, the artists visited various places and met new people whose experiences elaborated their artistic expressions and thoughts. By positioning themselves or having their perspective on the realm of marginal or boundary rather than the central, they have been developing their art, which sheds light on conventional systems and publicness in art, and cultures or histories of the locals. What did they gain through their residency? The exhibition, which takes place at the Artist Cafe Fukuoka, features the new works created during their time in Fukuoka.

Sugihara Nobuyuki×Nakamura Ayaka
Residency Period 2024.10/8- 12/ 25
Based in Nagano. Organizer of the annual SHINANO Primitive Sense Art Festival since 2010. Inspired by Azumizoku, the people of the sea described in Kojiki (the Records of Ancient Matters), they have been researching in several places, including Shikanoshima, Buzen, and Tsushima. They plan to incorporate their encounters and certain things that dwell in these regions into their new installation, representing a boat. Through improvisational dances, the artists wish to evoke memories of the boats by which the Azumizoku had traveled.

Urakawa Taishi
Born in 1994 in Fukuoka, based in Fukuoka city. Under the theme of “contemporary landscape (perspective),” Urakawa creates paintings combining gradient lines and images found on the Internet. The new works for this exhibition reveal Urakawa’s artistic explorations of Hakata-bei (traditional earthen walls), the images of which underwent deconstruction and reconstruction to form a new landscape.
