Venue

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and its vicinity

The Fukuoka Triennale is an international exhibition that introduces the most up-to-date art of 21 countries/regions in Asia every three years. This is the 2nd exhibition, following the 1st one held in commemoration of the inauguration of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 1999.

The theme of the 1st Fukuoka Triennale was ‘Communication: Channels for Hope’, in which many works using the contemporary media such as computers and videos were exhibited. While contemporary society that awaits such exhibition enjoys the blessings of the high technology, it is also true it faces serious issues like the fragmentation of families and communities and the conflict between traditional values and globalization. We thus became keenly aware of the necessity of a method for deeper understandings among people that cannot be gained through superficial communication in such contemporary society.

In the midst of the above-mentioned situation, the 2nd Fukuoka Triennale suggests different value systems and possible alternative values in order to seek for the truly rich future, in which people would respect each other. In other words, it exhibits the works as solid existence produced by hands and presents a live exhibition that can be experienced only at the exhibition venue, not merely passing on one facet of information indirectly.
Under the theme of ‘Imagined Workshop’, specially highlighted are the works made of indigenous materials using local skills and those made in collaboration between artists and artisans such as terracotta, textile, and handicraft works as well as paintings. These works will cultivate a new path in the possibilities of art and society. by discovering new values in works mace by hands, involving other methods of expression than “art” and seeking for the new philosophy of collaboration.

Many artists and art-related people come to Fukuoka from all over Asia including Japan during the exhibition period and the dynamic Art Exchange Programs such as lectures and Open Studio as well as collaboration with different people are held with Fukuoka citizens and museum visitors. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has organised various Art Exchange Programs as its routine activities. We sincerely wish even more people would come across with people, art and culture of Asia through this festival of contemporary art, and such opportunity will enhance the mutual understandings. compassion and trust.
