We are delighted to announce the opening of the exhibition for the two emerging artists, Abdus Salam (Bangladesh) and Sherman Ong (Malaysia), who work actively both domestically and internationally.

The two have been staying in Fukuoka since September to participate in the artist in residence program at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Through various engagements in activities such as the workshops conducted with the citizens, they have developed new artworks reflecting their experience in Fukuoka as well as the social environments and reality of contemporary times in Asia.

We look forward to welcoming all to see the outcome of their residency.

Participating Artists

Abdus Salam (Bangladesh)
Born in 1971. During his residency in Fukuoka, Abdus travelled to historic sites including Kushida Jinja shrine and Shofukuji temple in Fukuoka, and the ruins of Oka Castle in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. Following these visits, he created the work Space Print by making paper imprints of the historic buildings and relics. The artist also created an installation titled After the Air Attack in Fukuoka, 1945, inspired by research made and materials compiled on the subject at Fukuoka City Public Library.

Sherman Ong (Malaysia)
Born in 1971. The artist wrote a script based on the real-life experiences of 14 performers. From this, he created the experimental film work Hashi, which depicts the frustrations of three generations of contemporary women. He also created the photographic series Visual Haiku, inspired by Japanese haiku poems, and another photographic series called Missing You, capturing the memories of a number of Fukuoka women.
