For this year’s first term of the program, Chen Ching-yao (陳擎耀) from Taiwan and Budi Agung Kusurawa from Indonesia were invited and stayed for 70-days from May.  We are pleased to announce an exhibition, Winds of Artist in Residence 2012- Part1-, highlighting the achievements of the artists during their time in Fukuoka.

Chen Chig-yao has created 4 photographic works as part of his photographic project which the artist has developed since 2009, called “Restaurant Project”.  The works shows various people dressed in Chinese, Indian, Mafia, and the Edo period’s Samurai and commoners costumes in various locations such as a Ramen noodle shop, a curry shop, a coffee shop which serves “NEAPOLITAN” spaghetti, and a Japanese-style restaurant in Fukuoka.  He also has made a video work which depicts five men from different countries dressed in school gym suit and exercising “Rajio Taiso (Radio gymnastics)” in the middle of a shopping arcade.

Using discarded materials such as a plastic bag, Budi Agung Kusuwara has made “Ogoh-Ogoh,” a papier-mâché monster which symbolizes the evil side of human spirit and is used for the ceremony on New Year’s Eve in Bali.  Making the statue into black-and-white photographs and then printing them on canvas, he painted and touched in it and has created 3 works in two dimensions.  In addition, he also has made a video documentation of the parade of “Ogoh-Ogoh.”

Their works are also the fruit of various collaborations between the artists and many people in Fukuoka, who joined in their project as a model, offered a shooting location, lent costumes, and etc. Each artist has also conducted workshops for elementary and junior high school students twice.  We would like to invite you to see the outcome of their art-making and exchanges in this exhibition.
