Lucas Odahara (Brazil) and Arpita Akhanda (India) are invited to join the third period of our Artist in Residence Program, which started on January 13. We welcome the two to talk about their previous work, what’s on their minds after spending the first two weeks in Fukuoka, and their current plans for the upcoming artwork. Don’t miss the chance to meet the artists whose works have been presented across the globe!

■Lucas Odahara
[Residency Period] Jan. 13〜Mar. 26, 2026
Born in 1989. Based in São Paulo. Developing across a variety of media including but not limited to ceramic graze painting or collage, Odahara’s work embraces the complexities and manifold layers of self-recognition. With a background in his family’s migration from Fukuoka to Brazil, Odahara explores the gates of Japan and paper crafts, which will be the inspirational source for his new work. Winner of the Berlin Art Prize 2022.

■Arpita Akhanda
[Residency Period] Jan. 13〜Mar. 25, 2026
Born in 1992. Based in Santiniketan, West Bengal. Akhanda explores the body as a memory collector through different practices such as paper weaving and performance. During her residency in Fukuoka, she plans to develop work that delves into the rivers, nature, textiles, and other traditional crafts of the Kyushu region. Grand Prize Winner of The 2025 Sovereign Asian Art Prize (Hong Kong).
