Artist in Residence Program 2023 Part 3】Kick-off Talk Meitao Qu×Naho Kawabe×Tomohiro Hanada

■Meitao Qu
Residency Period: January 10 – March 9, 2024
Meitao is a London-based Chinese artist working across sculpture, installation and digital media. Her practice engages with how images are constructed and the role they play in shaping discourses of cultural and national identity. Through worldbuilding and storytelling, she works with miniature environments and architectural models to play with the visual economy of the cityscape as a symbol of ‘progress’.
During her residency, Meitao will expand her research into the relationship between popular culture, urbanisation, and national identity in East Asia. She hopes to create works that bring together urban and natural landscapes in Fukuoka and wider Kyushu, to explore the histories and folklore embedded within them.

■Naho Kawabe
Residency Period: January 10 – March 9, 2024
Kawabe is an interdisciplinary artist who works on film, installation, three-dimensional objects, drawings, and sometimes in combinations of these genres. In Kawabe’s artistic practice, result of historical and socio-cultural research focused on “coal” overlaps with personal experiences in an attempt to redefine contemporary social structure.
In 2022, the artist conducted research and interviews with the Japanese who used to work in coal mines in Germany between the 1960s and 70s. During the residency in FAAM, Kawabe hopes to expand research to make new artwork – from coal, which is closely related to the daily lives of people in Fukuoka, industry, and urban infrastructure, to carbon materials expected to be utilized in the future.

■Tomohiro Hanada
Residency Period: January 10 – March 9, 2024
After graduating from Omura Beauty Fashion College in Fukuoka, Hanada moved to New York. After working as an assistant designer in the fashion industry, he became a stylist in London. He then enrolled in Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin in 2015 to study photography and started working as an independent photographer in Berlin.
Hanada attempts to reveal and reconstruct invisible things inside the visible through photography. He also addresses a question towards ourselves where we tend to stop thinking in our daily routines, and tries to shed light on something that have been overlooked in everyday life.
In this residency in Fukuoka, the artist plans to create a new city landscape of Fukuoka with support from an art university and the local people. He also plans to make a collage art work as well as bookbinding workshops.
