Hands Reweaving the Future

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum will hold two large collection exhibitions in 2025, each curated on a different theme, showcasing selected works among approximately 5,700 collections.
The first exhibition which starts this spring showcases about 50 pieces of cutting-edge contemporary art that incorporate lived experiences and cultures of Asia. Fascinating materials such as fabric, thread, embroidery, rattan craft, and papercut combined with the extraordinary technique of hands draw our attention, especially when they transform into the art of sophisticated design and form.
Divided into four chapters, the show begins with the fabulous celebrations and festivals in Asia, then moves on to versatile handcrafts that have adorned such events, followed by a room of shimmering light and shadow before reaching an imaginary forest of meditation. How have the hands of Asian artists been unraveling the craft developed through their lives to “reweave” the vision for the future? Their artistic practice may provide us with some clues to living in this increasingly bewildering world.
As a museum that has long been exploring new values in art beyond its conventional framework, including a variety of acquisitions such as folk art that influenced modern and contemporary Asian art, we look forward to welcoming all to this distinctively unique collection show.
