Mr. Asia – Finding Heroes in Asian Art

Every era brings new heroes who are believed to save society or offer people with dreams. In Asian popular art such as films and propaganda posters, we find idealistic portraits of actors, politicians and leaders whom people have aspired to in various eras. On the other hand, by casting a critical gaze upon those same figures, contemporary artists have tried to raise questions on society and history. In this exhibition, we invite you to look for “Mr. Asia” among the male figures in the artworks.
We take a popularity poll for “Mr. Asia” at the end of this exhibition. A strong, beautiful, competent or helpless man … what kind of man would you call “Mr. Asia”?
