Profile

Since 1993, Jeremy has been working internationally in various field of art, such as paintings, sculptures, installations, and performance. Through his artistic practice, Jeremy delves into social contexts, questioning societal changes, where and how one lives in a society. During his residency in Fukuoka, the artist plans to visit local temples and historical places to conduct research on Shintoism and animistic culture. He is also fascinated by Youkai stories and images, which remind him of elements from Singaporean Chinese culture.
Jeremy is the Winner of the UOB Painting of the Year Singapore 2023, organized by the United Overseas Bank in Singapore. The artist will be staying in FAAM for a month.

March 8 Artist Talk

Hiah told the audience that the new woodcut prints he made during his residency, The Toilet Yokai and The Library Yokai, were inspired by the vernacular monsters and spirits that are believed to be living around humans in Singapore but have not been visualized as art. King Kong Business, Not Monkey Business was modeled after Bitcoin, representing the world of virtual currency.

March 6 – 16 Residency Exhibition

Hiah displayed the work The Toilet Yokai in each toilet cubicle on the 7th and 8th floors, The Library Yokai in the Art Cafe and Reference Library, and the previous two works King Kong Business, Not Monkey Business and Dreaming of becoming the butterfly in front of the exhibition gallery.

March 5 Exhibition Preparation

Together with the museum staff, the artist worked hard to prepare the exhibition scheduled to start the next day.

February 27 Meeting to Discuss the Exhibit and Space

Hiah discussed his previous and developing works to display at the exhibition. After deciding to put the works in the toilets and the reference library, he started printing more editions of each work.

February 13 Arrived at the Museum

Hiah arrived at the museum and joined a guidance meeting with the staff.
