Traces of Residence offers insights into the ever-growing archive of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum’s (FAAM) artist-in-residence program by revisiting three art projects from its history, each presenting a distinct perspective on life in Fukuoka. Through interviews with former resident artists reflecting on their time in the city and archival materials, the exhibition sheds light on artistic processes and highlights the various forms of interaction that developed between artists and local publics.
The artworks revisited are Kuroshio I (2005) by Wu Mali, We All Know Each Other (2007) by Phuttiphong Aroonpheng, and Where Do We Go From Here? (2009) by Wei Leng Tay. All three artists worked with participatory approaches, and each project was shaped through engagement with diverse individuals and communities. Together, they offer portraits of Fukuoka at particular moments in time, conveyed through different artistic practices and social contexts.
The exhibition was developed within a curatorial class at the School of Design and Graduate School of Design at Kyushu University in cooperation with FAAM.
