Parallax: What Has Always Been There

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum invites emerging artists from around the world as part of its Artist in Residence Program, offering them a platform to create new work and engage with local people in Fukuoka. This year, three artists joined the program in its first period (July to October 2026), each with a different focus: delving into the sacred, community, and wartime memory during their research and art-making processes.
To present the outcome of their residency, we are pleased to open this exhibition, Parallax: What Has Always Been There. Parallax refers to a shift in perspective or the effect in which an object is seen from different positions. The works of three artists allude to subjects or events in our everyday lives that are often overlooked. Through their works and unique perspectives, how might our mundane sceneries in Fukuoka appear in a new way? We invite everyone to share this experience at the exhibition.

Part 2: Artists will gather in the Community Space to share their thoughts about the residency.

Lecture Performance by Ian Tee
Road to Singapore: A Reflection on Nakamura Kenichi’s War Paintings and War Memories

Hằng Hằng
Residency Period｜2026.7/16-10/8
Born in 1995, working between Paris and Hanoi. Her works explore sensible and immemorial memories through oｒdinarｙ narratives and archival fragments.
In Fukuoka, her research stretches from theaters, excavation sites, and shrines to everyday spaces. Through these encounters, she questions the possibility of “the personal sacred”. Her new work unfolds across an ice room and a soil room. Taking ice as a spatio-temporal environment and soil gathered from excavations in Fukuoka as a material for cross-sensory experience, she invites us to encounter matter and reconsider our perception.

Amshad Sunuwar
Residency Period｜2026.7/15-10/8
Born in 1993, based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Stemming from his distanced upbringing from his Sunuwar-Koyu Rai heritage, his work interrogates cultural erosion and identity. In Fukuoka, Amshad delves into the relationships between individuals and the community and how such invisible memories or experiences are carried through time. He runs a collaborative project in which he collects textures (graphite rubbings on paper) of objects/places of memory from many people and plans to transform them into a landscape.

Ian Tee
Residency Period｜2026.7/15-10/8
Born in 1994, based in Singapore. His projects often begin with an obsession about a painting genre or a piece of visual culture, and how its meanings can be recontextualised through stylistic or material shifts. Ian develops his work through research into wartime history and its remnants in Fukuoka, as well as on Nakamura Kenichi, a Fukuoka-born painter who visited Singapore during World War II. Intersecting with his experience of military conscription, his work addresses historical connections between Singapore and Japan and how conflict is remembered.
