This exhibition features one of the new generation of artist of the late 1980’s Malaysia, Tan Chinkuan. He was born in Johor Baru, at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula, in 1966. He was awarded in the Contemporary Youth Art Show (held by the National Gallery Malaysia) every year from 1988 to 91, and became a representative figure of the young artists, especially those of with Chinese origin. The Fukuoka Art Museum, the parent museum of FAAM, cast a spotlight on the artist and held a solo exhibition as part of the ‘Asian Artist Today Fukuoka Annual IV’ series entitled ‘Tan Chinkuan: Stage Art of Tragedy’. More than ten years later, this exhibition is once again to follow the work by Tan Chinkuan from his beginning to rediscover the original element of his creations.
