Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is pleased to announce the opening of our special exhibition of Nalini Malani, who has been awarded the Fukuoka Prize this year. Through her large-scale design of forms incorporating videos and paintings that entail her confrontation with the modern and contemporary history of the Indian subcontinent, the artist has been relentlessly delving into current yet universal themes such as religious conflicts, wars, oppression against women, and environmental destructions. Malani has been known as one of the most internationally acclaimed artists in Asia.
The show explores her previous and recent works, including Hamletmachine, the video installation that she made as the first invited artist-in-residence in FAAM in 1999 and later has been screened across the globe, as well as an epic painting Despoiled Shore, and the print series titled Cassandra’s Gift.
