Oil Painting in the East Asia -
Its Awaking and Development
- Period

Exhibition Gallery
The exhibition explores the dawn of modern art and its development in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul, and other locations across East Asia, from the outbreak of the Opium War in the 19th century through the mid-20th century. Featuring 148 works, it aims to highlight differences arising from particular conditions in each region, as well as commonalities shared between these regions, formed by similar cultural backgrounds. Through such attempts, we wish to consider the meaning of “modernization” in terms of the social and cultural contexts of East Asia.
