Modern Artists is the series to introduce the process of modern Asian art development through their encounters with Western modern art from the end of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The Museum at the moment possesses more than 1,200 works of modern and contemporary art, around 200 of which are continuously exhibited. It will enable us to introduce more detailed information on various kinds of art in each period and region.
The first exhibition takes up Affandi who left the brilliant tracks in Indonesian art history. In the rapid changing period when Indonesia was striving for their independence, Affandi created modern paintings taking his subject matters in his own daily life to express his emotion and spirit, which is greatly different from idealised landscape paintings made for Western exoticism. 24 works from his early days to establishment of his original expressionistic style with swirling tropical energy, it aims at tracing the track of Affandi who lived his life in a tumultuous period of time with painting as a way of expressing.
