In the Modern Artists series, important artists and movements in the modern art in Asia are introduced and the exhibition this time is the second of the series. It features modern art flourished during the time of independence of Singapore and its nation building process.
Based on the Southeast Asian art scene overviewed in the ‘Birth of Modern Art in Southeast Asia’, the exhibition, Nanyang 1950-65: Passage to Singaporean Art features how the Chinese artists, who were the major activists during the tempestuous period of the nation building (1950-65), dealt with the social reality and how they created art as a mirror of the era. It also features how they established the distinctive modern art in the region called Nanyang.
