In the 1990s, contemporary artists who employ images of films, cartoons or games in their artworks emerged in Asia.  Considering how these artists of young generation grew up being immersed in popular culture, it is no wonder they began using images from the everyday life.

Although their works may appear superficial and carefree at first glance, they are actually made with clear intention.  Sometimes a call for social injustice and issues through a direct means (e.g. posters teaching moral lessons or propaganda) may not be the most effective approach for getting attention.  The use of familiar images taken from cartoons and games can make viewers feel closer to the works while also raising their awareness of the issues.  This exhibition presents contemporary works from the FAAM collection, which demonstrates such so-called tendency of “Pop Sprit”.
