Beyond Boundaries:
Asian Artists in Euro-America
- Period
- Jan 2, 2009 〜 Mar 31, 2009
- Venue
Asia Gallery A
With the change of the times that Asian countries called for the independence from colonialism by the west, artists increasingly have left their own country in Asia and moved to Europe or America. The reason why artists started to live in Europe or America is varied: those who sought a new creative climate, to those who had to flee political situations or those born and raised abroad. Focusing on two areas, Europe and America, this exhibition introduces the works made by artists who live and work there.
It is not always easy to live in a country which has a different culture, language, custom, or idea from your own country. Artists from Asia who are regarded as “the other” in Europe or America are often seen with a prejudiced or stereotyped gaze. In this exhibition, however, the artists’ attitude to transcend such gaze can be seen in the works even showing cultural elements the artists belong to. Through the expression of the works which are beyond boundaries, such as the west and the east, nation, ethnicity, religion, or gender, what is “Asian art” or “Asia” seems to be questioned. We may find a new perspective to transcend the boundaries in the works.
