To open a book is to encounter an unknown world. When we read a book we laugh, cry, think and gain courage. Other books are hefty and impressive, containing valuable knowledge and works from which we gain authority of feel awed. Or we can see the history of nations, societies and families in a book and might also catch a glimpse of power behind a book, the power which made writers write it.
This exhibition of books and typography coincides with the reading season of autumn. Through the transition of the seasons, as autumnal leaves are ablaze with full color or the early blow of northern wind and first snow start, this exhibition could provide you a chance to encounter art works boldly incorporating books and letters.
The characters drawn in the exhibits actually do not display intelligible texts. Some are illegible and only fragment of words and records. Even so the meaning of the works can rather be opened up if these seemingly meaningless letters are combined with the other images. It means viewers can make these works interpretable at will with the help of letters and images. Then they will discover another world beyond the concepts and meaning originally represented by the letters and texts placed in works. In addition, the records and letters in the background of pieces could possibly be the key to uncover artists’ thought behind their works. Now, the adventure beyond printed words is about to begin!
