Since ancient times, societies have created numerous tales and imageries on this theme “transformation,” drawing on their fertile imagination and careful nature observation. The sources of such tales and imageries are natural wonders, a sense of awe towards invisible forces, and the desire for change that people all have are.
This show brings together works expressing artists’ honest emotion towards transformation, such as their dreams or desires, a sense of wonder, and expectations for change. Each works depicts various subjects, such as a strong sense of complete change (Lee Bul’s “Chrysalis”), robots associated with various transformations (Sumi Takamasa’s “Armored Cross Calappa”), youngsters transforming themselves into non-human (Cao Fei’s “COSPlayers”), and someone made him/herself subtle different in disguise or with sunglasses.
In this contemporary world, where cartoons and animation films are full of super heroes, monsters, and idols, art works on the theme of “transformation” have become more to reflect the state of society and time than ever. Whether being beautiful or ugly, and right or evil, this possibly stems from the manifestation of desire for “our own personal transformation” or “change of people and society,” using an analogy from imaginary matters, such as Manga and cartoon films.
Let’s see what transformation you can dream up after viewing these works and say “Wanna Transform!”
