“The Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (Fukuoka Triennale or FT)” has been held every three years since the inauguration of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) in 1999 and aims to present the most up-to-date art movements in Asia, a continent which is undergoing dynamic change.  Commemorating the 15th anniversary of its inauguration this year, FT5 will be held at the FAAM.

Under the title “Panorama of the NextWorld: Breaking Out into the Future,” FT5 presents 36 artists and groups from 21 countries and regions in Asia.  Artists who have been developing their own modes of expression and trying to transcend conventional styles, materials, techniques, and subjects have been carefully selected for inclusion in FT5, alongside innovators working in genres that have not yet been recognized as “art.” Furthermore, FT5 will hold a special section to introduce innovative developments in contemporary Mongolian painting.

This exhibition, held ahead of FT5, presents a snapshot of FAAM’s four triennale shows to date, from FT1 (1999) to FT4 (2009).  This exhibition is divided into two parts, with FT1 and FT2 highlights displayed until 3 June, and FT3 and FT4 highlights shown from 5 June.  Focusing on stand-out works from each show, the exhibition includes documentation of the exhibition spaces and performances.  We hope this exhibition will help guide you towards the forthcoming FT5.
