Foreword
Fukuoka has since antiquity played a significant role as Japan’s gateway for exchanges with the rest of the Asian region. With its unique history in mind, the Fukuoka Prize was established in 1990 through the collaboration of the City Government, academia and private businesses in order to contribute to peace, and to further understand the extraordinary cultures of the Asian region.
The Fukuoka Prize was established to honor the eminent achievements of individuals, group or organizations who create as well as preserve the many distinct and diverse cultures in the Asian region. Since its establishment, 127 prize laureates have received the prize so far. Many of them have played active roles not only in the Asian region but also throughout other regions around the world.
It is our great pleasure to announce Kimsooja, as the Arts and Culture Prize laureate of the Fukuoka Prize 2024. To commemorate her award, we are delighted to have this special exhibition. Kimsooja is one of the most important figures in the contemporary art scenes working vigorously across the world including but not limited to Asian regions.
With her consistent theme of cloth as an integral material in a person’s life, as well as the act of stitching, wrapping, and unraveling, her works deal with universal issues that our world is currently facing. This exhibition showcases her early installation work Deductive Object from the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum collection and one of her representative video performance series A Needle Woman.
It is also our earnest wish that this exhibition will offer many visitors a chance to experience Asian art and culture. Moreover, we hope that the prize will contribute to establishing a framework for mutual learning and exchange for the people of Asia.
In closing, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to Kimsooja and to those who have given us their kind support.
