■Bruno Ruiz
[Residence Program] Oct 5, 2024〜Dec 25, 2024
Born in 1990, in Mexico. Based in Mexico City.
Ruiz considers his project to be two-fold, with each component informing another in flux. The first is his own collective practice with Red de Reproducción y Distribución (RRD), through which they regard publishing as a tool to make public, as it not only enables distribution of content, but also collaboration throughout the process. The artist plans to present the mimeograph machine, the principal tool that allows for such collaboration, and its results.
■Sugihara Nobuyuki×Nakamura Ayaka
[Residence Program] Oct 8, 2024〜Dec 25, 2024
Sugihara Nobuyuki Born in 1980, in Nagano, Japan. Nakamura Ayaka Born in 1982, in Okinawa.
Sugihara Nobuyuki has been organizing the SHINANO Primitive Sense Art Festival every summer since 2010. He conducted research on the life of indigenous people in Taiwan as a recipient of ACC fellowship in 2019, and also in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore as a recipient of fellowship supported by the Agency of Cultural Affairs in 2022. Nakamura Ayaka makes her original hat as an artist after having worked as a strawberry farmer. They live in Azumino (Nagano) where traditions of Ohune matsuri (festival) are inherited, known as the residence of Azumino-zoku, the people of the sea.
During their Fukuoka residency, as if to trace our ancestral sea route, they plan to visit the Shikaumi shrine, where Azuminoisora, an ancestor of the Azumino family, is enshrined. The duo will collect the shells on the beach of Uminonakamichi that bridges Shikaumi island and mainland Kyushu. They wish to present a performance in front of a shell boat they crafted with their handmade mask of Azuminoisora, to recall memories of the boat that once carried Azumino-zoku.
■Urakawa Taishi
[Residence Program] Jul 1, 2024〜Dec 25, 2024
Born in 1994. Lives and works in Fukuoka.
Working on the theme of contemporary landscape (perspectives), Urakawa combines different motifs in paintings, such as graduations of lines and images on the internet. Graduations of lines play an important role in Urakawa’s artistic practice, as they could blur the contours of objects and boundaries. Having the chance to join the residency in hometown Fukuoka, Urakawa plans to research Hakata-bei, a traditional type of wall made from recycled materials. The artist expects that Hakata-bei, which has long been the subject of interest for Urakawa, might give some clues in drawing lines and keeping them in a state of vagueness.
■Kamimura Takahiro
[Residence Program] Jul 1, 2024〜Dec 25, 2024
Born in 1980. Lives and works in Fukuoka.
Since the beginning, Kamimura’s artistic practice has been changing from time to time while at the same time tackling the question of what is called “sculpture.” Recently, although not based on an active decision, Kamimura often uses materials found in studio. The artist is intrigued by the concept of time in regard to events and things that are related to specific feelings – such as when something gradually comes into shape after dripping down from nearby oneself or when a timeline jumps out of its range and is inserted into another of its kind.
