Socially Engaged Art in Asia Pacific
【Date】14:00-17:00 Sunday, 26 November 2017
【Venue】Ajibi Hall 8F, Fukuoka Asia Art Museum
There is a dynamic relationship between art and society in Asia and the Pacific that is distinct from Euro-America. This symposium provides a forum to first discuss diverse perspectives on Socially Engaged Art occurring in Asia Pacific today and second to reflect on them deeply from multiple viewpoints. Perspectives from Indonesia, Hawai‘i, Japan and the ocean will illuminate the complex relationships art has to postcolonial, capitalist and plantation remnant conditions. This dialogue will begin by defining points in a network with meaningful language distinguished from Euro-American-centric terms of socially engaged art to date. Through discussion links will be found between these points in new constellations of oceanic space and time.
