Blue Night 11-Tragic 2
Tan Chinkuan
■Year 1989
■Medium acrylic on canvas, plank, wood, cloth and iron
■Size (cm)
Malaysian art world of the 1990s confronted with the powerful rise of young artists of Chinese descent. Tan Chinkuan is a prominent figure in this movement. Deeply contemplating on human nature and love, he created a mysterious world of night, the 'Blue Night' series. When it was first made in 1987, the work was composed merely of paintings. The characters in that work stare at a viewer and try to pull him/her into their world. However, in this work, there is no such figure. Instead, the world of 'Blue Night' spreads out into the real space and the stretching red path invites audience to the direction they should go forward. It is the world where we get glimpses of the human nature. Silhouettes of despair and insanity are projected on the windows in the painting. Human figures wearing masks as well as black human figures stand outdoors upright just like chessmen on checkerboard. Would tradegy also befall to the man and woman who are the only ones showing their faces in this world?
