Chen Cheng-po "East Taiwan Seaside Road" (1930) Collection of Hofu City
"East Taiwan Seaside Road" by Chen Cheng-po, a master of Taiwanese modernism art, was found in Hofu City Library in August 2015.
The painting was donated to Hofu city in 1941 by the family of Kamiyama Mitsunoshin, a politician from Hofu, but was stored and displayed as the work of an unknown artist. It was also believed to be lost among the Taiwanese researchers. However, as the political accomplishment of Kamiyama receives attention, the painting was once again “discovered.”
Since late 2015, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has been entrusted the work from the Hofu City and has conducted the research and the restoration of the work as an expert of modern and contemporary Asian Art. Upon completion of the six months long restoration, we would like to share the painting that has recovered vividly.
Please enjoy the work by a master of Taiwanese modern art, one of a few remaining works of the era found in Japan. The work is also a precious documentation that shows a historic link between Japan and Taiwan.
