Contemporary Asian Artist VI
Freedom in Blossom! :Gangaw Village and Experimental Art in 1980s Burma
■Period:13 December, 2012 - 20 March, 2013
■Venue:Asia Gallery B
This time, the “Contemporary Asian Artist VI” exhibition deals with “Gangaw Village Art Group,” the first artists collaborative for contemporary art in Burma.
Founded by Rangoon University students in 1979, the group has pursued various experimental arts, organized exhibitions, and led the art scene in Myanmar, especially in the 80s. Their works created from their youth to maturity during the time of socialism, military regime and democratization are still filled with surprisingly fresh energy.

Surviving the tough time that they could not hold any exhibition, the artists explored free expressions within various constraints. The exhibition retraces the footsteps of these artists in such hardships and the history of their group activities through their art works, about 40 pieces by 8 artists.

Currently Myanmar is experiencing the wind of change toward democratization. We hope the exhibition will provide our audiences a chance to see the locus of the expressions of the artists, who survived such changes.
