From the 11th Chinese National Art Exhibition 2010:
Contemporary Fine Arts from China
■Period:13 November, 2010 - 10 January, 2011
■Venue:Exhibition Gallery
This exhibition brings together award-winning works from the Chinese National ARt Exhibition, held every five years in China. Held regularly in Fukuoka since 1990, this is the fifth such exhibition to date.
The exhibition, organized by the Chinese national government, is drawn from the largest public art competition in China. It was first held in 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established. In this, the 11th exhibition to date, 50,000 entries were submitted from around the country. Exhibitions of the works according to genre were held in China's 10 major cities, and the winning pieces selected from these. In late 2009, around 500 winning works went on display at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. From this exhibition, curators from Japanese museums organising a trouring exhibition selected 81 pieces for display in Japan, in categories such as Chinese painting, oils, watercolor, prints, lacquer and - for the frist time in Japan - sculpture.
Given the government backing, the show consists mainly of academic pieces rather than avant garde contemporary works, and techinical excellence is a given in a show this size. Several supersized, hyper-real paintings have been included. The works depict China's cities, youth and changing culture, conveying much about the fast-growing nation that has recently hosted the Beijing Olymics and Shanghai Expo.
Wang Renhua "Memory of China" (Chinese painting)
Yang Guofant "Father and Mother" (lacquer painting)
Wang Xiaobao "Desolate Hometown" (oil painting)
