ParallelRealities:AsianArtNow
The theme for FT3 is Parallel Realities.
In a world where high-speed visual and communications technology has seeped into every corner of daily life, global and local elements either coexist or approach one other within the same time frame, as does real and digital information, and people who think and feel differently. Because of this, ordinary people can move easily between different worlds. While conflict and problems remain possible dangers resulting from this state of flux, FT3 examines how "parallel Realities" can have potentially positive outcomes in their crossing of cultural and social borders. From video installations throbbing with sound to small, tranquil sculptures; from quaint old-fashioned materials to contemporary interiors, and from the world of comic strips and games to the raw reality, FT3 will let viewers experience the Parallel Realities promised by its theme.
The Art Exchange Programs slated for the period will combine with FAAM's Residential Programs, and encompass projects that will undoubtedly bring the people of Fukuoka deeper and more broadly in contact with art.
While FT2 emphasized the handmade and handcrafted, this Triennale differs in its noticeably urban and futuristic works by young artists who have grown up in a world flooded with virtual images and information. These new-era artists, who freely wield the fun elements of pop culture, may have the power to create a new Asian culture this century.
