Xijing Men

Artist unit consisting of Ozawa Tsuyoshi, Chen Shaoxiong and Gimhongsok. They hail not from Tokyo (the "Eastern Capital" ? as its component Chinese characters can be translated), nor from Beijing (the "Northern Capital"), nor from Nanjing (the "Southern Capital"), but from the imaginary city state of Xijing, the "Western Capital." To date the unit has presented three works: Chapter 1: Do you know Xijing?, Chapter 2: I love Xijing ? The daily life of Xijing President and Chapter 3: Welcome to Xijing ? Xijing Olympics. The fourth chapter is exhibited here. The works undermine the foundations of concepts such as nation, ethnicity and the idea of unique cultures being tied to particular areas. The reason they doesn't come across as simplistic fantasies or idealism is that the artists emphasize the elements of theatrical humor in the works, and they deeply understand the meaning of performative practice and the idea of physicality it entails.
