Truong Tan

1963

Truong Tan, who started as a lacquer painting artist in the 1990s, primarily painted abstract feminine male statues. Seeking public debate about the gay minority was at the time considered daring in the world of Vietnamese art. The tenacity to challenge the established order and social norms can also be seen in the installations he has been working on in recent years. The work about the female dancer bound by social norms such that she can not dance, and the work featuring a giant nappy to prevent the leaking of a bribe put into the pocket of a policeman are examples of this. This exhibition announces a new work based on the society and history of war-torn modern Vietnam. Using a woman’s dress made from camouflage army uniform, he raises questions about the prevailing logic of war in the name of peace.
