Sopheap, who studied art in America and returned home in 2003, is one
of the artists being showered with attention in Cambodia’s recently
booming art scene. His works, made from woven cane and bamboo,
traditionally used in Cambodia, are conspicuous for the beauty of their
organic forms and a clear concept showing the artist’s social concerns.
Delta, the work exhibited here, was produced following the decision to
fill Boeng Kak Lake in central Phnom Penh for the purpose of urban
development. The overall shape of the work is adopted from a human
stomach, with a myriad of intertwining cane representing the body’s
vessels and rivers. Just as if one part of the intestinal tubes gets
blocked, it obstructs the entire human body, the artist’s quiet anger
is expressed as he wonders what kind of influence the dammed-up lake
will have on Cambodia.
